Decades of Style

I missed the last few Simplicity pattern updates, but happened to check in today and found some new vintage reproduction designs to tempt me.

There are a few I will be adding to my collection - this blouse, for instance, is lovely.

While not all of them are my absolute favorites, or as complex as I might wish, I do have to applaud Simplicity for the variety of styles/decades they are choosing.

It would seem that Mad Men and other pop culture references have certainly inspired quite a few of the 60s and 70s designs.  But when they start calling the 80s "vintage" I am going to have a fit.

I would, however, love to see some romantic 1930s dresses with amazing sleeves show up in the catalog . . . hint, hint!  How about this gorgeousness; or this one, or this one, or this one, or perhaps this one?!

There also seems to be quite few vintage patterns for children – this one is making me want to work with scalloped edges.

And I am rather disturbed that I am jealous of the doll who gets to wear that dropped waist, checked dress . . . I love the style and want my own grown up version.

Certainly YSL's Trapeze silhouette of 1958 has grown on me in recent years.  Does that mean 1970s fashions (other than those that clearly reference the 40s and already have my attention) will tempt me in the near future?  Only time will tell.

  1. For some reason the 1197 pattern makes me think 'star trek'.

  2. I do like their choices, and actually am planning to make another of their vintage releases, which is a boatneck top with French darts, cut for a woven.
As for 70s being vintage, I guess that makes me vintage, too! Though I have found a number of 70s Halston patterns that are timeless, several of which I made up back then.

  4. I am as horrified as you are when I hear 1980's stuff being described as 'vintage' but with the often used definition of 'between 25 and 100 years old' we can't really deny it....

    1. But I want to live in denial!!!! Part of the problem is that I think of vintage as classy or classic. Acid wash jeans are none of those things. Although, I suppose there are some 80s designs that may actually have a good "bone structure" if I can get past the styling!

  5. Mee thinkz you doth protest too much. There is enough fitted style in Adolfo ' creations to smartly ensconce you at some soiree.

Plus, if any chassis could rock the 80s fashion, it would be.yours.

  6. The styles (if you call them that?) and patterns in the '80s made me stop sewing for myself! Now, sewing from vintage patterns from the '50s, '60s, and '70s, makes up for all that. Right now I am obsessed with '60s' dress and coat ensembles... Good for Simplicity for bringing out some of these looks.

    1. Those 80s patterns often make me cringe. I wonder it the sewing community will fall in love with them in another 20 years? I hope not!

  7. that blouse with the fold over twist neckline is so pretty. Don't make the 1950 top though, I tried that as I was experimenting with stripe placement last summer and the fit is quite bad, super gapey neckline and the waist was not in the right place in the back (at least to me)

    1. The neckline looks wide on the illustration . . . I was wondering about that - thanks for the heads up.

And I definitely have plans for the twisted neckline (along with 20 other patterns!). Now that the days are getting longer I am hoping to have more sewing time.

  8. Out of all of them i like the 1197 the best, it seems like it would be a nice Winter/Spring transition dress.

  9. Am I the only adult who wants to make Barbie outfits that match my me-mades? It's a little embarrassing...

  10. My spouse made me sit down and watch an episode of Masters of Sex for the costumes; his commentary came down to : "You could make that, I bet you have ten of those in your closet right now, Check out that collar!" I did make him pause it a few times so I could make some notes.

  11. 1197 is very cool -- love the simplicity of the coat style. And yes, I'll join you in your fit if/when the '80s become "vintage"!

  12. I have the original of 1197. Maybe I should make it since it's come back around.

  14. Ha - I guess I'm becoming vintage! I had that (Barbie) doll pattern, S1242. I inherited it in the 70s from an older relative, so I wonder what year it came from? Anyway, I later learned to sew from that one and another doll pattern. My aunt made the view F jumpsuit in turquoise taffeta my dolls. I loved it.
