And now for something completely different . . .

So this was fun!

And surprisingly enough, I really like wearing this dress.  Is it the most flattering garment in my closet?  Probably not.  Will I be abandoning all of my dresses with fitted waists?  No way.

And I have to admit that it feels bizarre to have a bunch of loose fabric around my waist, but the experience was not unpleasant.  It was actually quite fun to make and wear something so far out of my comfort zone.

The pleats are what initially drew me to the pattern, and they are, without a doubt, my favorite design element.

I did add 3/4" to the torso length so this slightly longer than the original, but if it was much longer, I think the dress would be quite difficult to wear.

The pegged hem also helps to keep the shape interesting.

So will I make another?  I am probably finished with this particular pattern, but I am definitely going to take a second look at garments with little to no waist definition.  And I would call that a successful experiment!

  1. Looks great, as expected! The color is awesome. Also, have you tried belting it so you have the option of waist definition or is it too bulky for that?

  2. Oh my! This is beautiful on you! You should definitely make more of these types of dresses. Going outside of the box really worked for you. Bravo!

  3. looks great. I know what you mean - it is somewhat difficult to choose a new shape and it feels odd to wear (at least to me) but you are tall and can wear anything! lovely dress very of an era. and great fabric. I look forward to seeing what you create in 2016. Happy New Year!

  4. Pockets. POCKETS. All dresses and skirts need pockets. What a perfect "go to" dress when you want something snazzy, but easy and comfortable. I bet it would beautiful dressed down with flats and a fun brooch.

  5. You've totally succeeded at making some that looks both fresh and modern, and retro in the same garment. Plus, you tried something new and had a great time doing it. That's inspirational for all of us.

  7. Yes, it looks great and a stylish change. I think you definitely need the more shapeless dresses to be shorter, I've made the mistake of taking shift shapes below the knee and that just looks frumpy.

  10. I think you look fabulous in this dress! It's definitely a departure from fit-and-flare, but you carry it very well. Sometimes surrendering the waist is both more comfortable and more fashionable. It may not meet traditional figure-flattery checklists, but it's still very flattering to you as a person. Variety is the spice of life!
