Christmas in La La Land

I will be traveling to Los Angeles over the holiday weekend, and was hoping to get some suggestions from locals or anyone familiar with the area, and thought that the old blog might be a good place to start.

Specifically, are there any fabric stores that cannot be missed?  Or vintage stores and antique malls, or fashion museums, or really anything fabulous to see while in the vicinity.  I suspect that many places are going to have limited holiday hours, but if you have any suggestions, I would love to hear them!
Thanks!  And now it's back to the sewing room . . . I am trying to make myself a Christmas themed dress, but time is quickly running out!

  1. Well, the LA Fabric District is always worth a visit. I particularly recommend Fabrics & Fabrics, at the corner of 9th St. and Maple Ave, for linens and silks. And Michael Levine, half a block down Maple from Fabrics & Fabrics, has a fairly wide selection of just about everything.

  2. Laura Mae,

Be certain to get a bite to eat at The Brown Derby and Perino's, stay hydrated by stopping by the soda counter at Schwab's, and enjoy an evening at the The Mocambo.

  3. BB Blacks & Sons, just outside the fabric district is a do-not-miss. Mood LA is also a must-see. It's nearish - not walking distance, but a short drive. I believe that FIT has a museum in the same area with continually changing exhibits. The fabric area as a whole is amusing, but those are the stores where your money will fly from your wallet.

  4. I love the garment district and visit whenever I'm in LA -- I grew up there but now live on the other side of the country. It's a great way to spend a few hours and a few dollars. Prices are terrific.
Best to have a vague idea of what you are interested in as it is otherwise overwhelming.

This is basically where the Hollywood costumers go, and it is FABULOUS. The rest of the places named above are awesome as well.

  6. Quite a few people mentioned them on Instagram, too - I think I’m going to have to stop by!

  7. F & S Fabrics on Pico Blvd. has fabrics, notions, excellent button selection. International Silks and Woolens also has an extensive collection of vintage fabrics, along with their regular collection of gorgeous fabric. You'll be close to Hollywood and might want to check out Musso & Frank's, a restaurant that has a lot of old Hollywood history.
