Coffee Bean Day Dress

These pictures were taken a couple of weeks ago, before the weather got really cold (well, cold for Marin County!).

Vintage Vogue 2876

This is one of those patterns that I initially had some misgivings about.  I had it in my stash for years before finding a suitable fabric, and while constructing the garment, decided that I was not happy with my choice and perhaps the pattern itself.  But I went ahead and finished it anyway.

Silly me - this dress probably gets the most wear of all of my self-made garments.  It is incredibly comfortable and easy to wear.  Proof positive that first impressions are not always correct!

Dress:  Made by me, Vogue 2876
Shoes:  Nine West “Jacamou”
Earrings: Kate Spade

P.S.  I am sure everyone is sick of hearing about this from me, but I could still use votes in the Threads Ultimate Sewing Challenge (voting ends November 30th)!  And remember, every time you vote you are entered to win a Threads prize package!

  1. Really love your dress. Pattern is beautiful, what kind of material did you use for this dress. Is it jersey, or coton?

  2. @Diana 'poetsie' Diana: It is a woven rayon that I found at JoAnn Fabrics, of all places. I could not believe my eyes when I came across it hiding amongst all of the polyester. Now I wish I had purchased more yardage while I had the chance!

  3. This dress is fabulous! Isn't it funny how sometimes the dresses we aren't too excited about are the ones we wear the most?? I've had that happen a few times with vintage patterns that I was slightly indifferent about but then turned out to the best outfits!! And thanks for the heads up about the bernina contest...I didn't know you had entered but I just went over and voted and will do so every day until the 30th!!! Good luck!!

  4. I have seen this pattern before, but now see how beautifully it looks because of your post.
Thank you for sharing it; it is indeed a great combination and looks lovely on you.

May I ask, did you choose to install the side zipper or not? Also, did you line only the bodice per the instructions or choose to line the entire dress?

  5. I may have to pull this pattern out of my stash and give it a go. I really like your rendition of it.

  6. @greytone I used an invisible zipper in the side seam. These days I usually use a regular zipper with a lapped seam, but this invisible zip turned out very nicely.

And I lined the entire dress. Because of my limited yardage, the skirt lining was cut without the extra ease/gathers which keeps the extra bulk at the center front to a minimum. If I ever make the dress again, I would do this – a bit of gathering is flattering, but extra bulk is not!

  7. I love it! The fabric is pretty and era-appropriate. And I really love your puppy! Not to mention the background makes me miss my old Marin County home - oak trees and ivy everywhere. Lovely fall photo shoot!
