How much is too much?

Working with vintage patterns can present interesting issues.

Sometimes trying to figure out how much yardage is needed for a particular design is complicated by the fact that fabric requirements are listed for 35” wide fabric.  Not to mention that most conversion tables I have found are limited to around 4 or 5 yards – and so many of my 1950s frocks use considerably more than that!

This app has solved my problem.

The one quirk is that numbers must be entered in decimals.  (If you cannot remember the decimal version of a fraction, a cheat sheet may be found by clicking on the “How To” button.)

I am often late to the game with things like this, so perhaps everyone already knows about this helpful little application, but if not, go check it out!

[Disclosure:  I found this app on my own and received no compensation – I just think someone might find it useful!]

  1. Thank you for this! Now if it would take it one step further and converted it from imperial measurements to metric for us Canadians!

    1. Oh my goodness, I feel your pain. The U.S. tried to go metric when I was in elementary school, and that was not a fun year. I was young, but it was already too late to think in something other than inches, yards, and miles!

I think adding a metric version would be brilliant.

    2. I did a quick search in the Apple App Store and there are converters that do that, but they charge a nominal one time fee (.99). It might be worth it.

  3. Very cool. I'm usually very late at finding and even more using this type of software, so it's definitely new to me.
And I also often come across this issue with vintage patterns and fabric width.

I'm going to check it out. I just hope it does metric too.
